Respecter l’humain et l’environnement

Nous avons la chance de voir tous les jours l’océan, de se promener sur les plages et dans les montagnes du Pays Basque. C’est ça sans doute le vrai luxe ! Et en même temps nous sommes conscients du réchauffement climatique annoncé, de travailler pour un secteur – l’habillement – qui contribue fortement à ce dérèglement et à la pollution de l’environnement. Alors, qu’est ce qu’on fait ? On arrête tout et on va tout nu (comme dans une photo de Tim Swallow, voir ci-dessus) ? Eh eh…

En attendant ce retour au plus simple appareil, on agit ! Parce que nous sommes convaincus qu’une multitude de gouttes d’eau finit par créer un courant ! Depuis l’origine, le respect de l’homme et de l’environnement conditionne le projet Bask in the Sun. Chaque saison, nous essayons de mieux faire. La route est longue, mais voilà 6 engagements que nous tenons déjà :

1. PRODUIRE LA MAJORITÉ DE NOS PIÈCES EN COTON BIOLOGIQUE

Actuellement 60 à 70% de notre production est en coton biologique certifié par le Global Organic Textile Standard® (GOTS). C’est un label international strict qui garantit l’origine et la traçabilité des fibres de coton utilisées. Dès l’automne prochain, ce sera 90% de nos tee shirts et sweatshirts.

2. SUPPRIMER LES PRODUITS TOXIQUES
Tous les tissus que nous produisons sont mis en couleurs dans un atelier bénéficiant du label Oeko-Tex® standard 100. Ce standard européen s’appuie sur les normes internationales et garantit une parfaite innocuité de nos matières : il n’y a pas de colorants cancérigènes ou d’allergisants, pas de pesticides, pas de phtalates, pas de composés chlorés, pas de métaux lourds, d’hydrocarbures, de solvants ou de composants volatiles dans nos teintures.

3. CHOISIR DES PRESTATAIRES RESPECTUEUX DE LEURS EMPLOYÉS
Qu’elle soit le pays, nous pensons que chacun à droit à l’application de droits fondamentaux, un salaire minimum légal et à des conditions de travail décentes. C’est ce qu’exige le label GOTS pour l’agriculteur qui cultive la plante, comme pour les employés qui fabriquent le fil tissé pour confectionner le jersey de coton 100 % biologique.

4. FABRIQUER LOCALEMENT
Tous nos vêtements sont conçus à Guéthary au Pays Basque et confectionnés à 800 km de là au nord du Portugal. Quelques kilomètres à peine séparent la filature, la teinturerie, l’atelier de sérigraphie, la confection et le service d’expédition. C’est un vrai circuit court, qui limite les transports entre chaque étape de fabrication et évite un bilan carbone désastreux.

5. PROPOSER LES MEILLEURS PRODUITS POSSIBLES
Nous ne croyons pas à la fast-fashion : produire à bas coût, renouveler sans cesse les collections en éliminant les produits non vendus, ce n’est pas notre truc ! Au contraire, nous cherchons la qualité, nous croyons au vêtement auquel on s’attache, aux coupes ajustées, aux finitions impeccables et aux détails bien pensés.

6. DIMINUER SANS CESSE NOTRE IMPACT ÉCOLOGIQUE
On peut toujours faire mieux. Donc pas question d’en rester là ! Nous cherchons en permanence des solutions pour limiter encore plus notre impact écologique.

Ce sont nos engagements. Ils reflètent notre implication pour une mode éthique, durable et équitable. Ils prouvent que l’on peut être à la fois une marque textile engagée et proposer un vestiaire masculin de qualité.

We are lucky to see the ocean everyday, to walk on beaches and in the mountains in the Basque Country. That’s the true luxury, without any doubt !

And at the same time we are aware of the expected global warming, working in an industry – clothing – that highly contributes to this disruption and to the pollution of our environment.

So what do we do ? We stop everything and we go running naked (as in the Tim Swallow’s picture ) ? Haha…

While waiting for this return to our natural costume, we act ! We are deeply convinced that a multitude of small water drops can create a flow ! Since its origin, respect for human and for the environment has driven Bask in the Sun’s project. We try to do better season after season. The journey is long but here are 6 of our commitments:

1. Produce the majority of our pieces with organic cotton
70% of our collection is produced with biological cotton certified GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), an international standard which guarantees origin and tracability of cotton fibers. As from next Fall Winter collection, it will be 90% of our t-shirts and sweatshirts.

2. Cancel toxic assets
All fabrics we make are dyed in a manufacture with the Oeko-Tex standard 100. This European standard is based on international regulations and guarantees a perfect harmelessness of our fabrics : there is no carcinogenic neither allergizing dyes, no pesticids, no phtalate, no chlorinated composites, no heavy metals, no hydrocarbons, no solvents or volatile constituents in our dyes.

3. Choose partners who are respectful towards their employees
Whatever the country, we think that everyone deserves the application of fundamental rights, a minimum legal salary and decent working conditions. It is requested by the standard GOTS for the farmers who cultivate the plants as well as for the workers who make the spinning, to produce our 100% organic jersey cotton.

4. Manufacture locally
All the clothing is designed in Guethary in the Bask country and produced 800 km further in the North of Portugal. We count only a few kilometers between spinning, dying, printing, garment manufacturing and carriers. It is a real short cycle, which limitates transportation between each stage of the manufacturing and avoids a desastrous carbon bill.

5. Offer the best possible products
We do not believe in fast fashion: produce at low cost, renew collection over and over and eliminate unsold products. That’s not our thing ! At the opposite, we seek for quality, we believe in clothes you get attached to, in taylor made style, in perfect finishing touches and in well thought details.

6. Constantly decrease our environmental impact
We can always do better, so no reason to stop here ! Even small changes make the difference. We permanently seek for new solutions to decrease our environmental impact.

These are our commitments. They show our engagement for an ethic, durable and fair fashion. They prove that you can be an engaged clothing brand and offer a qualitative men wardrobe.
